Colostrum is the first nourishment received by a newborn mammal. It is a source of important nutrients, immune factors and growth factors. Immune factors help newborns develop immune resistance.  Immune factors

While helping newborns develop their immune systems, immune factors are also important protective substances. They are marked with capital letters G, M, A, D in E. IgMs are the first antibodies produced after contact with an antigen (foreign substance). IgGs develop immediately after IgMs and they are in the largest quantity. IgAs are located in the mucous membranes and have antibacterial and antiviral functions. IgDs and IgEs are present in lesser quantities.

IgG antibodies are the most abundant immune factors found in colostrum. IgGs travel through the lymphatic and blood systems and if they encounter a foreign substance in the body (viruses, bacteria), they bind to it, thereby neutralizing it. Other important antibodies found in bovine colostrum are IgAs, which are found primarily in saliva and provide protection against viruses and bacteria.

LACTOFERRIN is a protein in colostrum with antiviral and antibacterial activity. It binds iron, thereby denying it to bacteria, which, as a result, cannot proliferate. Lactoferrin transports bound iron and releases it into erythrocytes (red blood cells), thus improving tissue oxygenation.

PRP is a peptide (rich in the amino acid proline) with immunomodulatory properties. PRP stimulates the production of T-cells and acts as an immunoregulator, thus contributing significantly to the homeostasis (stable metabolic rate) of the body, to activating the immune response to inflection and to alleviating the symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

Growth factors

Colostrum is the only natural source of two significant growth factors, TGF (alpha and beta) and IGF (1 and 2). Their most outstanding feature is the regeneration of muscle and cartilage tissues. These growth factors have also been proven to promote wound healing, which is particularly significant for injuries and surgical operations. TGF-alpha and TGF-beta are involved in normal cell activities: foetus development, cell propagation and tissue regeneration. IGF-1 is the only growth factor promoting the regeneration and growth of muscle tissue, while simultaneously slowing down its catabolism or degradation. IGF-1 supplementation during physical activity stimulates the body to use fat as a source of energy instead of carbohydrates or glucose.

Colostrum also contains substances inhibiting inflammatory reactions in the body. It has been proven that colostrum can be used as a supportive therapy for reducing inflammations and speeding up recovery.

Colostrum and its preparations may prevent injuries to the digestive system caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs).

Animal studies have shown that gastrointestinal damage may be reduced when non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are taken concomitantly with colostrum preparations.
